I thought of this great thread, wrote the first post all in my head on the way back from the movies, but then kind of decided that i'd not be able to present it in nearly the same quality it went down in my head.  At a minimum, I thought it would get ridiculed.

But then I remembered about people saying how they wanted to start awesome threads and then didn't, and i didn't want to feel that discouraged.

Thus, I'll just ask a question:
At what age did you decide that you didn't want to spend time with your family, and at what age did you decided to start spending time with them again?

I have a theory that most of mankind's wars are fought by the young because of biological impetus, and by the old because of familial impetus.

I was probably 14 or 15 when I decided not to hang out with them, and in my early 20's (ie not living with them) when I decided to hang out with them again.

I have always wanted to hang out with my family. Just after i got married at 21 I moved out of my parents house for the first time ever (and 800 miles away). I moved back home (not back in with my parents, just back to a nearby town) ten months later because not being around my family was driving me crazy. Four years later my family and I moved into my parents' house.

We are planning on moving out again in a few years but we need to save a little more first, pay some more bills off, etc. But I don't want to move far away again. Not having my family around makes me feel crazy.

I've always been kind of independent.

I never stopped hanging out with my family and I call them every 1-2 weeks.

I have no problems hanging out with my direct family (mother, father, and sister), and the only others I like hanging out with are my first cousin once removed and my second cousin (DJ, Ogre).  I hang out with DJ more than anyone else I know.  I'm quite reclusive, as I've mentioned before.

My dad doesn't speak to his parents very often. His mom comes to Christmas and sometimes day after Thanksgivings gatherings and she shows up when I invite her to my kids' birthday parties and the like.

When I was eleven my parents and I moved into my mom's parents' house. My parents still lived there, even after I moved out. They got their own house about three years ago and I brought my brood to live with them a year after that. My mom still goes to visit her dad regularly (her mom died about four years ago).

About ten years ago there were... Hmm.. Ten people living in my grandparents' house at one time. My grandparents, my parents, me, my aunt and uncle and their three kids. My aunt still lives there with my grandpa. My mom's family is very close. We like to commune.

Oh that's easy.

same thing, our family hang out every couple of weeks.

I wanted to get out of the home in highschool. In 3rd or 4th year of college already I started to like hanging out with my family. Now I call them nonstop. Especially my siblings. It's amazing watching people grow into adults and start to have intelligent thoughts. I'm big on family these days. I'm very clannish.

My mom was in a hurry to get out from under her dad's thumb and out of rural Virginia.  My parents always took us to visit her family frequently, though, and I never picked up on the tension when I was little.  My Dad's family was really close, outside of one douchebag brother who fancies himself to be an important somebody.

I havent liked spending time with my family in decades, and considering my immediate family disintegrated in the early 90s, we dont waste much time getting together.

Around 13. I haven't started to want to spend time with them again yet, I figure I'll do it when I leave home. Right now there's too much friction. It'll be easier later and I know I will later because they're cool people when they're not angry. And well, considering their main source of anger stems from me and my brother...

Oh yeah and my brother. I forget he's family because we get on so well most of the time. We're twins so we see each other a lot at school but I don't really like spending my free time outside of home and school with him because it's weird. Makes me feel like a loser for having no friends but my family. Hah. I won't see him as much come september because, for the first time ever, we're going to be going to different schools! Freaky.

I've never really spent time with my grandparents. Largely my mothers family live in India so we don't get to see them much and my dad's family don't like us so they don't want to see us much. haha.. They're totally cutting us out for the most part. I don't think they'll ever completely cut us because .. well it's family but they sure ain't keen. My dads brother and his family are cool though. They invited us over in the hols, I want to go. The only reason my mum puts up with the horrid people in our family is because she says we have a duty. I guess that's a sign of how different our viewpoints are because I'm of the honest opinion they're worth nowt.

My sister never got over my birth, thus making her an only child no longer. So as a result she is too consumed by jealousy to want to be anywhere near me. I've tried to have a relationship, but she doesn't return my calls so I gave up years ago. She hates it when my mother spends time with me. She's 40 and her 2 daughters hate each other...

I grew up in Mormon country.  Even if I had wanted to spend my time just hanging out with friends, they had church enforced family days.

Grand parents dead, parents dead, sisters both dead, wife separated, kid on his own.

i believe at 13 i started hating my family.. for no other reason than being 13.

Then when i was 19 and a horrible strung out mess, i called my mom for help and we've been incredibly close ever since.

we talk 3-4 times a week and visit once a month. i see my in laws every sunday for dinner.
