2009 has been a fantastic year for pop music, certainly the best pop music of this decade.  I can turn on the radio and not want to lobotomize myself, which is a great improvement.

I would attribute this to a few domestic political factors:
1) A black democratic president, for some reason pop music is almost always better during a democratic administration.  1992-2000 vs 2000-2008 is not even up close.  This is a personal theory of mine.
2) Recession makes musicians have to do better music or not sell shit.

But for real 2009 has had lots of good pop and pop/rap and almost all of it is dance able and enjoyable.

Shakira, Lady Gaga, Black Eyed Peas, Jay-Z & Kanye.

I don't care how gay this sounds.

Nothing gay about having an unhealthy interest in Shakira.

Agreed on pop music being better nowish than in recent years, but I totally disagree about late 90s pop.

That last video is awesome! I've made out on the steps of that building. It's a crust punk hangout after dark. There's an excellent bar down the street featuring 4 floors with balconies overlooking a huge outdoor beergarden. There are also 2 gigantic paper mache people in the garden that were moved from another much shittier bar that I used to go to in my freshman year. I bought the shoes I graduated in and the shoes I'm wearing right now not far from there too.

Wow I miss living in a nice city that's not Camden fucking New Jersey.

Shakira is infuckingsanely hot in that video.

Re: Pop music Reply #66 on: December 12, 2009, 07:30:43 PM
Seriously. She's fucking hot in almost every video. The "Whenever, Wherever" video from early 2000s used to force me to take cold showers afterward to cool off.

That Loba song is also catchy as fuck.

I knew a girl in undergrad that came from Shakira's home town. The girl was nuts. She used to roofie herself when we'd go out to raves. I remember her changing in front of me one time before we went out. I asked if I should leave her bedroom, but she said no it's ok. So I just kind of turned to the side to allow her some modesty. In retrospect I guess she was probably trying to sleep with me. It's a pity I'm such a retard with the women because she was rather pretty.

The OFFICIAL "Run This Town" Video

I love this song.
Yeah it's not bad. Rihanna's another hottie. I didn't like her at first, but she grows on a person.

Agreed. Although I reckon I'm off Bajans for a bit.

Speaking of Shakira, and good pop music, I still fucking LOVE her song La Tortura.

Yeah the MGMT video just reminds me of that song - especially how the kid is crying all the time and the monsters are all around him.
A cover of Magic Dance would be pretty cool. I'd like to hear the Portuguese Seu Jorge version if possible.

There was a Labyrinth sing-a-long at one of the Drafthouse movie theatres in Austin, tonight.  Just FYI.

Hate to be a wet towel here...
I'm not sure how one would qualify/quantify the 'improvement' in pop music.  It is still crap.
You poor kids got so used to untalented garbage (come on, the White Stripes?  How did those untalented mongoloids even get a record contract?) that a slight improvement deserves praise?
If someone serves up a steaming hot turd on a plate, and tells me it is dinner, I won't be happy.  If they take the turd away, and replace it with a slab of sod, I will be less displeased with it, but I will still refuse to eat the dirt.
Study music.  Learn a little about song writing.  Read some poetry.  Come back to the billboards, and you'll see it's a 20-segmented toilet.
A pizza with depth a and radius z has a volume of pi z z a.

Re: Pop music Reply #84 on: December 31, 2009, 04:15:13 PM
1) Even if it is crap, which it's not, it's enjoyable, which is what counts.  Pop music has to be appealing to the widest audience possible, by its definition that is what makes it popular.  Most people are not intelligent enough to appreciate the finer points of the difficulties in certain music, so only a certain type of music appeals to them.  What you can notice in pop music, even as an enlightened listener, is that most pop artists, even though they know they are dumbing down their music to their audience, slip in subtle notes, lyrics, and points of style as a reference to you the intelligent listener, and even if they don't, you can still dance to it.

2) I didn't "get used to" anything, I listen to stuff from the Baroque Era to the Modern Era.  I have taken courses on Musicology at University.  Pop music is 1/10th of the music I listen to, I listen to literally everything across the gamut.  And if there's something I haven't ever heard I will listen to it.  I love all music, and I think that the Pop Music of 2009 has been way better than the Pop Music of the last 4-5 years.  Which is something worth celebrating.

3) Of all of the bands to criticize in our day, you choose the White Stripes?  And your criticism is that they aren't talented?  Jesus Christ I don't even know where to go with this one.  That's just a fucking retarded statement from top to bottom.
Pour the wine, hold the grind, quarter to nine, let's go.

I kinda like that Black Eyed Peas song. It's unabashedly positive, a going-out song. I like No Doubt's "Hella Good" for the same reason.

I love that song.

I saw an interview with them talking about it, that's what they meant it to be. A little absurd too.

also, not really pop but.. i like it.

That one's kinda blah. I'm so disappointed in rap these days. Lupe Fiasco's pretty good, but other than him I can't think of any rap since The Game first came out that I've been into recently.
