Here at one of our base offices, they have huge flatscreens with FOX NEWS on all day, every day. Be glad your tax dollars put a fifty inch high definition television in a waiting area about six feet by ten feet with seating for three. The best part right now is the amazing conversation taking place. These other two cats are going back and forth about how FNC is the network that isn`t partisan and reports the god`s honest truth.

Kyle - stop what you're doing now and become a supplier for crap to the forces
Loaded-Gun.com - I don't know what the hell they are talking about or why they are even there. They don't make serious points and they don't joke, but they still manage to make a lot of posts somehow.

Does he know any high ranking officers?

Because when Generals retire, they get hired straight away to sell garbage back to the military.  There probably isn't a military contractor in the US that doesn't have one on staff.

Re: Military Contractor Offices Reply #3 on: September 16, 2009, 09:26:24 AM
Generals?!? Try Majors. I don't know anyone below Lt. Colonel, and few below Major who didn't leave active duty in AFIC and at LEAST open a back room contract shop to supply office equipment to the local base or post. A good friend of mine was a Technical Sergeant who made his first million two years after he set up shop doing modular furniture installs and reconfigurations at NSA. He now has 20 employees, all former military with clearances.

But yeah, you gotta know somebody.

OMG. This would be my own personal hell.

If you want to torture me, strap me to a chair and make me watch Fox News for 24 straight hours with a bunch of conservatives.

Hey, that sounds pretty similar to my July 4th 2009 vacation!

I kind of really like FOX News. I like how obvious the slant is underneath their bold veneer of "No Spin," "Fair and Balanced," and "We Report. You Decide." It's frankly hilarious most of the time and I think it provides a fascinating insight into the rallying points, base motivations, and other retrograde subcurrents of our society.
I also tend to appreciate professors that I have a strong visceral distaste for. Being irritated by something tends to clarify my thoughts and I usually do better in classes where I hate the professor on a more personal level.
The best is when you start to examine lag-time between their stirring up of an issue and the response from their base. If the issue really resonates with the base then the internet is filled with a chorus of echoes within the first day, but if it's something that the base cares less about then it may take a week of indoctrination for the base to "see reason" and take up the party banner with strange device, Excelsior!

Within the last month or so, judging by recent posts in the politics forum, it looks like FOX is hitting a few solid home runs with the base. A new thread or line of argument tends to crop up within a day of the issue arising. I noticed that with the talk of Van Jones and I came very close to making a prescient post about how we'd all be talking about Acorn in a few days. Given the theatrical way they're handling that scandal at FOX, I expect an Acorn thread any day now over at Politics.

I don't understand how outrage over publicly funded apathetic degenerates willfullly advising a pimp on how to misappropriate public funds to finance criminal activity is indication of bias.

Re: Military Contractor Offices Reply #12 on: September 16, 2009, 03:05:51 PM
You seem to be assuming I'm making value judgments.

All I'm saying is that it's often extremely clear the cause and effect between FOX hyping something and it becoming an issue for the masses. It's not like most of the content on FOX is an issue for people before FOX hypes it, and I doubt that much of the stuff FOX hypes would become an issue but for FOX's hyping of it.

I'm not defending anything FOX is attacking necessarily. In the case of the Acorn employees, what they did is clearly indefensible. I'm not saying that FOX is blowing it out of proportion. I'm just saying that people talk about the things that they talk about because these things are being talked about on FOX. That's all. It amuses me. The end.

EDIT: Feel free to start the thread on Acorn if it will amuse you to do so.

Well, like you said, the ACORN thing is clearly indefensible. It's also all over the news, not jut FOX. Perhaps ACORN is a poor choice of illustration for your point.

I disagree, because I think that anything the public is discussing that's been reported by FOX is also being reported by all other media outlets. They'd be fools to ignore something the public was interested in simply because FOX was on the case too, right?

I'd like to mention however, that I don't watch FOX news, nor any other news.

Re: Military Contractor Offices Reply #15 on: September 16, 2009, 04:07:22 PM
There are strategic decisions about what to cover and how hard to cover it that are made by all news agencies.
FOX, for example, has decided not to broadcast the most recent 3 Presidential addresses (including the infamous child-brainwashing speech). This selective reporting wasn't just fluke. FOX has been running stories on the Tea Party movement to the exclusion of discussion of the details of the attempts at healthcare reform. I credit FOX to a great degree for bringing about the Sept 12 March Against Obama.

As Balor has pointed out a few times, MSNBC isn't bias-free either. They did a pretty sketchy job of covering up the race of black Obama protesters according to a youtube clip Balor posted, and they are beginning to get on my nerves with their constant replaying and replaying of the Joe Wilson "Liar!" clip. This is an interesting foil to the FOX replaying and replaying of the Joe Wilson "I've already apologized, the president accepted my apology. I'm not going to apologize again." clip.

The news agencies haven't had any integrity since days of Edward R. Murrow. I've become resigned to the idea that News is the same as Political Entertainment these days. What gets me about FOX, though, is that they have this unflinching straight man way of describing themselves as "fair" and "balanced." FOX fans claim that FOX is the only network where you can hear the truth, and as silly as it sounds they actually believe this. It's kind of sad I suppose, ultimately, but I find their audacity and their cheek to be amusing. That they can stand before a national audience and blatantly push a perspective while simultaneously laying claim to and indeed inspiring belief in some pure and unvarnished version of reality which only they can guide their viewers to.

I see the same humor in the hand-wringing televangelists that promote poverty, decry avarice, and... pass the plate to help the faithful buttress themselves against the advances of Mammon.
It's the audacity of it all. Audacity enlivens me. That's why I watch FOX.

I think it is, considering the fact that the Daily Show did a long segment on the ACORN thing last night.

But that said, I agree with most everything else said here about FOX News. It's a fucking joke. And so is MSNBC. And so is CNN.

Give me BBC news any day. It's still nowhere near perfect, but it's better.

All I watched was FOX last night so maybe things have changed, but as of Monday night FOX was reporting on ACORN and MSNBC was reporting on Joe Wilson's outburst.

BBC is great. What I like them best for is their scarcely-concealed disdain of some of the sillier things Americans do. I love when they interview stupid stupid Americans and have their views justified. I saw a BBC interview with Ann Coulter a few days ago on youtube. It was incredible.
