Aren't you like 5'10?
ever tried. ever failed. no matter. try again. fail again. fail better.

Right. or 5'11", which isn't that tall, but I wear at least a 2 inch heel daily, and when i go out I wear 3 or higher.

Luckily for me, Amy tends to wear flip flops.

sorry, I meant intolerant as "unable to eat/digest". It just seems that a much higher percentage of US folk have trouble eating a wide range of foods, in particular dairy products, at least amongst people I know.

It seems strange, we eat essentially the same foods. And with all the attention that gets paid to food safety these days you'd think nothing would slip through

Mello is tall and awesome. And she lives near a place that sells great hummus. One of the best meals I had in Philly, after scrapple of course.

I used to see a girl who was 5'10" barefoot, 6'5" in her dancing shoes. Never heard me complaining.
It's truly a shame I am no longer there to yell at girls to make out with you.

Did we get Mazza when you were here? I bet we did. They make the BEST hummus and baba on EARTH! Their pita is top notch too!
And thanks I think youre pretty awesome too!!!

Youre right, a lot of us do have food allergies and it makes me wonder what happened in the 70s and 80s that made our generation like this.

Si - thats right, Amy is my height too! And shit, if I was in the islands, id wear nothing but flip flops too. I tend to wear them in the summer, but I really love my heels and wedges...

I did 40 minutes on the aero-walker at the gym today because I didn't want to jar my back. It was brutal. After finishing I downed a litre of sports-drink immediately, on top of the water-bottle I normally have. It got my heart rate to 165+ for the last 20 minutes.

That's nuts. I did my usual 30 mins on the elliptical today but my heart rate didn't get up past 155ish at any point. I then lifted pretty intensively for another 40 mins, then came home to get ready for work. I carry a 500ml water bottle around the gym, and fill it back up several times. I filled it up just before I left the gym for the 10 minute drive home, and drank the whole thing on the way.

Then I threw up about 3 litres of water as I got home. I should probably drink less water.

I think I only went that far because I wasn't going to do weights. Normally I'll stop at 15 minutes or so simply because I sweat so much and don't want to spend 45 minutes lifting and feeling like I'm wearing plastic cling-wrap. Srsly, you could have watered your front lawn with my kit after that effort. Ya'll would lift more than I do however, I tend to get leaner the more I try to do... to a point that is, a healthy diet of beer keeps me well padded.

As anyone who comes down to Antigua will quickly learn, sweating is how I do. If I'm planning on a long gym session, I bring an extra shirt. Thankfully my gym provides as many towels as are needed, too.

I broke a sweat when I went running yesterday.  I couldn't believe it.  I sweat.

If any of you lifting types want to give a few pointers on how to break into weights, I'd appreciate it.

I'm joining a gym this week and I'm looking to do a little sculpting. I'm going to ease into it and not jolt my body. It gets a rigorous regimen at my warehouse job as it is.

I'm 6'1 and weigh in at 210, about 25 of it is straight fat. I'm looking to add some muscle, in my upper body and try to keep it all under 200lbs.

Re: Let's see some recent photos of your ugly mugs Reply #2780 on: August 26, 2009, 04:19:14 PM
-Don't worry about the weight so much, cuz you'll almost certainly gain weight as you add muscle.

-Do at least a few minutes of cardio before you lift. Getting your heart going will help the rest of your body, and it will also loosen you up some before lifting. Also, more cardio = more fat burned = weighing less. Yes, I know it's boring as shit.

-Stretching is good. I don't stretch excessively, but I do like to try to loosen up whichever body part I'm about to work. Especially knees, but then I have shitty knees.

-Drink plenty of small sips of water. If you start feeling thirsty you're probably somewhat dehydrated already.

-Breathe. Take note of yourself breathing, and get into a rhythm of breathing/lifting. Also this may seem like a pointless thing to tell you, but it's much easier to breathe deeply through your mouth.

-Don't neglect your legs. Your ass/legs are your biggest muscles, and therefore your best fat-burning tools. Leg exercises aren't as fun as upper-body stuff is (for me at least), but it's gotta be part of your workout lest you end up like this:

Red Stripe "Legs" Commercial

-You might consider hiring the services of a trainer for a couple of sessions, to familiarize yourself with the various free weights and machines, and to be shown how to do more different exercises than you'd probably think of on your own.

-Compound exercises are particularly good for adding muscle and burning fat, you're utilizing more than one specific muscle at a time, and your heart rate will be higher than a simple isolation exercise will get it. A fairly easy one to start off with would be hammer curls into shoulder press.

-I like to do circuits of different exercises, interspersed with short sprints on the treadmill. It's pretty tiring, but it keeps your heart rate up.

-Eat nothing but super-healthy food.*

-Don't drink a whole bunch of booze.*

---

*My failure to follow these last two steps is why I'm a pretty strong, fairly fit, but cuddly 230, instead of some kinda lean, mean, muscle machine.

All of what he said plus the most important one:

> Get instruction on correct posture for each exercise before you lift heavy weights on it. It will help eliminate injuries (it's so easy to fuck your back on just about any exercise) and you'll get more out of lower weights than the gorilla's in the corner.

Re: Let's see some recent photos of your ugly mugs Reply #2782 on: August 26, 2009, 08:23:11 PM
Good point. Definitely start with low weights, and as a general rule I'd say that doing 20-30 reps at a lower weight is usually better for you than doing 10 reps at a high weight. There's less chance of injury, and you get more toned than huge that way.
