Because why not, right?
CET: I cycled 24 miles today at the hottest part of the day and it was fine. Nice to know that I can do a long ride* at that time of the day, because that means at any other time it'd be even easier. Also, a bandana plus a fairly wide-billed cap really works for keeping my ears and face from getting sunburnt.
*yes, I'm aware that 24 miles isn't that far. But it's the longest ride I've done since I started getting really into cycling recently.
-
Hell yeah Why Not!!
I walked seven miles today. It was around 46 degrees and quite motivating!
And I don't mean walmart-walking. More like wanna-be jogging. My boots are kinda
Weird to exercise in but they are what I have right now.
Resistance bands for about 45 minutes, really focusing on upper body.
Hey, I keep reading that crunches won't help rid one of belly fat.
That what does that is all over cardio.
So does that mean crunches and moves of that type are for sculpting the-six pack?
-
As opposed to being sculpted BY a six pack, yeah.
-

this is getting silly.
-
Yeah, I'm not stickying this one ...
-
this is getting silly.
Get into exercising and you won't think so :)
Yeah, I'm not stickying this one ...
No need.
--
CET: 12 mile cycle earlier and then an hour twenty minutes of kickboxing just now. Feelin' good!
-
For the lack of potassium, I am now paying. Every core muscle I own is screaming in pain.... I'm putting an extra twenty of minutes of stretching in to try to ease that a bit.
Is it getting silly because there are new Current _____ Thoughts threads? Because exercise is not silly, well, unless you're being silly when exercising. :)
-
so for some reason i started doing weird interval workouts in my living room, and it hurts you guys, it hurts. i feel like such a wuss when 15 pound kettle balls things are kicking my ass. those things when you kneel and stand up. uggh. at least i get a good smoothie after.
-
Do you stretch before and after?
Does anyone stretch?
I do. My mom and sister gotgym memberships again and are actually going three times a week. I am stunned!
The other night my mom said that her whole body hurt and she was going to ask the doctor for muscle relaxers.
I asked her if she stretches before and after the gym and she looked at me like I had just asked her to fuck a dog.
And said no.
Wtf.
Muscle damage!!
CET: Working on building a daily and weekly routine. Walking Backwards. :)
-
I stretch before kickboxing. Never really before or after anything else.
I do warm up before I do anything heavy though.
-
I always warm up and stretch before fencing but not after. I walk home and its cold and that's my cool down. xD
Get into exercising and you won't think so
No.
Is it getting silly because there are new Current _____ Thoughts threads?
Yep.
-
You wouldn't rather we keep the workout talk to a specific thread than have every other post in CT be about this stuff?
-
36 mile cycle today, my longest yet!
-
That sounds great, I am going serious thought to what kin of bike would be best. Not The Village Bike.
I haven't worked out in 4 days but I burned calories.
Tomorrow morning I'm back on the routine! And excited!!
-
serious thought to what kin of bike
Hmm... tricycle? Unicycle? I'm not sure bikes have that much kin, really. BA DUM CHING!
-
But yeah, serious response to your serious thought: mountain bikes are the shit!
-
Heh. Does it matter that I don't live near a mountain? Is it the off-road tires? Those are the kinds of bikes I've been looking at. Not those ghey ones with the twisted-backwards handles and paper thin tires.
And. If my (future) bike was cOnsrtucted on the same conveyor belt and with the same material, as yours, wouldn't they theoretically be kin?
-
Trek 820 then.
-
I had a TREK 830, it was a damn fine bike.
Get tires that have a solid bead around the middle, they have less rolling resistance and ride smoother than the ones with bumpy knobs.
-
Ten+ miles a day on the fixie whip and systema power training.
Also I really like doing pushups to "fifty in the clip" by dead prez.
-
I have a Sun with a pedal crank forward. I ride 15-20 miles a day and it's great on my back. I'm down to193 from somewhere in the high 130s. Working 14 hour days and eating minimal carbs and less than 1000 calories per day might have something to do with that....
-
It's hard to believe that you are even 193 Zoom.
I've taken my proper place once again, with the running.
Now there's a little dog here that likes to run with me.
Is it strange that when I'm not very active my breathing seems to
Feel a bit off?
But every time I get back to it, my lungs feel much better.
-
I miss exercise. Being a dad is kryptonite for working out
-
Being a dad takes precedence over everything, IMO.
-
Zoomie, when he was here, was looking the BEST I've EVER seen him, and was VERY mentally balanced, and well, and that's over my 15 (or so) years of knowing him ... Even Melissa had to comment on this ... Good for him; he deserves his new(ish) happiness!
-
Of course he does :)
-
I'M FAT AND I'M GOING TO KILL YOU ALL!!!!
-
I'm goin' cycling.
Oh and now that I'm down to 199, I'm totally using Aaron's "under 200" thing.
-
Ive put on 3kgs. Can still see some on my collar bone though.
176lbs and rising.
-
How tall are you?
-
6'2"
-
So 176 is pretty healthy, no?
Somehow I've lost about four pounds over the last few days, despite eating a fair amount of junky stuff. It won't last, but it does mean that in about a week or so I'll likely have gone back up to about 199 and then will plateau at about 195 for a while. That seems to be how it works.
-
If it were muscle, yes.
AS it is now... you can see the bones of my wrists and only in the last few months have my ribs been covered in a thin layer of fat.
i'll skip the whole weight = health debate cause it will just get in the way.
I just then did a naked weight. 167.2 lbs. So if i take off the weight of the clothing i was wearing when i did the last weigh in ive lost about 3-4 lbs since i posted. At the end of the day it goes up and down depending on how many meals i eat a week and over xmas its been about 1/2 a meal a day or so.
-
Hai. I've been asking about the bowflex and elliptical at the 'rents house since late '02, since no one really used them. It was always, nah, we're gonna start using them next week. And fuck if I'm not one lucky motherfucker. Today, after truly enjoying watching my kids' basketball games despite not sleeping for three days... My mother says, Why don't you take that elliptical home with you? I say, all right! Then later, after some debate, my father says, well- lets go get that bowflex loaded into the truck.
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
So, I arrived home with new digs to put back together and use!!
And, my daughter is so competitive that parents with kids on opposing teams tell their daughters to watch out for her.
-
Now that the board is back (I refuse to believe it existed without me) I can post here about how fucking excited I am about the 2011 Cannondale Trail SL 2 I'm getting. FUCKING EXCITED!
Also, I had a really good workout today. Feeling awesome.
-
...and while I love my Sun Drifter, I'm in the market for a recumbent, preferably a SWB like the Lightning Phantom, But maybe a trike. Even on a noiseless saddle, I'm putting too much pressure on my perineum.
-
I want one of these: http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=62185&scid=1102&scname=Multi+Use (http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCProduct.jsp?spid=62185&scid=1102&scname=Multi+Use)
Why do Americans think step-through style bikes are for women? Step-through is way easier for riding in traffic, on boardwalks, etc.
-
Sun makes a step through. I test rode it before I bought me Drifter. It was heavier, but the weight was low. Good balance but lots of canal bridges down here and the weight troubled me.
-
I can't imagine wanting any bike other than a mountain bike.
-
Low Rider...
-
Last time I went mountain biking, I realized I'd rather hike. I like the quiet and being engaged, rather than whipping down a trail making sure I'm not going to hit a low hanging limb or something.
Step-through bikes are practical for commuting or general running around type utility. Also don't have to worry about someone stealing your $1,000+ mountain bike or road bike in the city.
-
I can't imagine wanting any bike other than a mountain bike.
Try walking upright after you put 100 miles on that mountain bike. Try getting your John Thomas up after sitting on that saddle daily for a few weeks, squashing your prostate. I love being in the woods, that's been established. But conventional bikes are just bad for you.
-
I don't have woods. I have a Caribbean island with lots of really shitty roads and little trails that claim to be roads.
-
One-eight-seven motherfuckers.
Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg - 187 On an Undercover Cop (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CwnyTZW0DOc#)
(Let the record show that the author of this post in no way endorses the killing of anyone.)
-
I don't have woods. I have a Caribbean island with lots of really shitty roads and little trails that claim to be roads.
Yeah that would make a mountain bike more practical. Just get yourself a noiseless saddle ok?
-
I just fixed the 2 bikes we have and we did a couple of miles today ...
-
Dancing is exercise, I should be stick thin by now.
-
I can't dance ...
-
...you can't talk, only thing about you is the way you walk?
---
I've had a good exercise week. Light on the cycling, heavy on the gym. Finished off today with a bench, leg-press and deadlift session. My legs are sore and I love it.
-
I can't dance ...
Neither can I.
It's the thought that counts?
-
It's weird, I can keep perfect rhythm and time with anything; I just can't dance ...
-
I can dance ok, I just never do because it's not something I enjoy.
-
I like to have a few beers before I dance, which takes away from the healthy part of the exercise.
-
Gimme some brightly colored huge ass pants and U CAN'T TOUCH DIS!!!!
-
I don't dance in public.
But I've been very motivated with working out. I have moved up from 20 minutes to 45 on the elliptical and now I run too. I can only run for about ten straight minutes. When I alternate run for 2 minutes and walk for 1, I feel like I am working more so I usually do that.
Also, ive only been doing moves that I already know with the bowflex because I haven't read the book yet. That is what I am doing tomorrow though because there are like fifty things I can do with that thing.
Since I've increased the cardio, and put some variety into things, I've dropped roughly three sizes.
Holy shit, I look so different. It's crazy!!
-
It's a good feeling, eh?
I did an awesome hike yesterday and a heeeeeavy legs session today. Walking tomorrow should be interesting.
-
Ended up taking a break today. Soreness. Tomorrow I'm back to it though :)
Dave, how was the ride? On the bike, I mean.
I am So interested in getting a bike :)
-
Try the thrift stores. The supply is starting to dry up as more and more people have to resort to bicycles but you might still find a good deal.
I once bought a $400 specialized for $9.98. My current UniVega cost me 24.98. The trek that got stolen last year cost $35.98. They were all (almost) perfect specimens, I haven't had to replace a single cable yet.
Though it took quite a bit of detailing to make them look like new.
Last year I rode my bike almost daily, this year I think I've made two trips to the store.
-
It was nice, thanks!
-
Walking today wasn't too bad early, stiffened up after breakfast, loosened up after an hour's bike ride, and now sucks.
-
I did not I know my butt muscles could get sore. Hahaha, and it's a good thing I rarely sit anymore. Yes, it's funny that I over worked my ass and am posting about it on a board where Dave will see. :)
Also, I am feeling very fortunate that I have the equipment I have because I think it would be hard for me to go to. Gym. Well maybe not now but when I started working out I may have become discouraged and given up.
My gratitude list has included my equipment for a while now and I am just feeling happy about it. Plus I'm really seeing results and it's such a rush :) woo!
-
I worked with a trainer a couple times a week for about a year in my early 20's. I was drinking way too much to take anything seriously enough back then, but I did learn how to do a shitload of stuff in the gym, which did wonders for my confidence. The first time I went to a gym, at about age 18 or so, some meathead asshole made some snide comment about how little I was lifting, and it put me off for ages. So despite now feeling completely at home in the gym, I definitely remember how intimidating it was to begin with. Like anything else, I think it's just a matter of getting used to being there. Getting to the point where you stop giving a shit what anyone else in the gym might think is good, but getting well known enough to your fellow gym-goers as someone who doesn't want to socialize much is even better.
-
That is probably good advice for a lot of social situations.
I used to have a subscription to Women's Health magazine and I read once that I should never worry about what anyone thinks of me while I am out running or in the gym, that fit people who work out and run and such see heavy people trying to run or workout and think highly of them for trying.
Man... I got even more self conscious after I read that.
Honestly though, I'm doing pretty well in the body image area. I don't spend much time worrying about what I may assume others are thinking. Simply put, I learned that I do not know what others are thinking unless they tell me.
It does make a difference to know that others have experienced similar things though.
I found an exercise that kicks ass with the bowflex yesterday. I attach the hand grips to my shoes and stand with one hand on the machine and one I'm my hip. Then, with both legs straight and knees slightly bent, I lift one leg backwards as far as I can, only moving my hip. Not bending either knee, and it works my glut and the muscle that runs the length of the back of my thigh.
Doing reps of 16, twice with each leg made jogging literally seem like a breeze.
It is crazy how strong I feel now too.
This is better than anything I've ever been addicted to LoL
-
I got sick a little over a week ago and ended up taking 5 days in a row off of exercising, and I think it actually did me some good. I've been having a really good time with exercise now that I'm back on it, so I think maybe a rest was just what I needed. Worth bearing in mind that it's good to take a little break every now and then.
I've been doing this one hike over and over, because it's awesome. It's not very far at all, just a couple of miles, but it's pretty much straight uphill and ends up almost as high as Antigua's highest point, just a couple of hills over and visually almost on the same level. You can see almost 360 degrees of coast from up there, and on a clear day the neighbouring islands are really visible. I've been working on getting faster from car to top, and bringing my fast dog with me. He's not unhappy about this. I've improved my time from about 45 minutes when I was really unfit and could only just make it up, to about 25 minutes at normal pace (when other people are with me, etc), to yesterday, when I set my best time yet, 19:30. I reckon that was about 60% walking fast, 30% jogging, and 10% running. Some of the hike is so fucking steep that I only end up gassing myself if I try to run it, I lost over a minute the previous time trying that. I think the trick will be to improve the ratio of jogging and running. I'd like to knock another couple minutes off my time.
-
The chances are highly likely that I'll be hiking part of the AT soon. I'm so flipping excited! This will be my first hike that is longer than half a day, and Not In Missery. :D
I'm not trained for this, nor do I have time to properly train. What I'm going to do is spend the time between now and when I go doing as much cardio as possible, and backing off the weights. I'll drop to using resistance bands once I'm down in FL anyway, so for my remaining time here I'll cut back to 3 days per week with the bowflex.
I think what I want is to work my cardiovascular system much more.
I am excited to see some place else... Finally!
-
this made my fucking night!
(exchange with a random older gent at the gas station just now, as we both waited in line)
---
him: what sport do you play?
me: excuse me?
him: what sport do you play?
me: um, none, really? ...oh, I cycle.
him: I was looking at your calves.
me: yeah. those are from cycling.
him: yeah. because the rest of you doesn't look that sporty.

Just got a kickass treadmill ...
YAY!!!

If a seemingly cool dude says he wants to work out with me, do you think that is what he means?
Or am I misunderstanding?
-
I need to start riding my bike moar.. shit makes me feel amazingly awesome.. Like pee wee herman!
prob is i only ride at night like a stealthy ninja because i hate being seen.
-
If a seemingly cool dude says he wants to work out with me, do you think that is what he means?

I'd say that is what he means but apparently I'm naive so I'd say he probably wants to bang you.
-
Prolly ...

Nice gym session this morning. I've been gyming more than cycling or hiking recently because of inconvenient weather.
I'm going on holiday from Saturday though, gonna have to make do with pushups and running and stuff till I get to England (doing Italy first), where I'll have a bicycle to use.
-
I've been doing Hapkido 3 times a week. As soon as I can get a home gym put together this summer, it'll be kettle bells 3 times a week to supplement.
-
I'd never heard of that, but I wiki'd and it sounds great. I miss kickboxing. I think I might start karate or something when I get back from holiday. And when I say 'or something', I mean karate. There are very few options here.
-
Hapkido is a fairly easy art, great aerobic exercise, and in Korea is usually practiced by children and the elderly. No offense...
-
No offense taken. I've bounced back and forth between gentle arts and hard, competitive arts over the years. I like it a lot more than I liked Taekwondo as far as Korean arts go.
I have generally found the philosophy/discipline/awareness aspect in the gentle arts more rewarding than the intense competition (and frequent douche-baggery) of an MMA school.
-
The only workout I do now is trying to fit in to my pants.
I got a bit of cardio walking up the stairs to my 2nd floor apartment.
-
So you're no longer a beanpole?
-
Emp with your history of broken bones you probably should stay with something low impact...
-
If memory serves, his history of broken bones has had more to do with strong drinking than weak bones.
-
Drinking, jumping off of things, mosh pits.
I broke a rib and a finger in BJJ classes, though.
-
I'm almost 20 years older and if I was as familiar with xrays as you and Evel Kneivel I'd probably stay thin by walking and not eating.
-
Was the jumping off of things ever a sober thing?
-

Oh nice, where are you going in england?
Hopefully the weather will stay good whilst youre here. Its been nice recently.
-
Cornwall, mostly. Going to visit my dad. Might stop in Devon on my way/way back and visit a friend. This depends on how single she is at the time.
-
Haha! Nice!
-
Jumping off of things was both a sober and drunk activity for a number of years. It's a good thing I don't come from money, otherwise I'd have been base jumping or doing something similarly stupid in my late teens/early 20s.
-
So you're no longer a beanpole?
I was until I turned 27. From 25 to 26, I was prescribed Adderall. I was in college, and I was fending off ADHD. Then after a woman left me, I started eating whole pizzas and drinking entire magnums of cabernet/shiraz every weekend.
I am 6'3" tall. In 2006, I weighed 170 lbs; now I'm around 265 lbs.
-
265's not that much for 6'3. But does it bother you?
-
According to the National BMI I'm obese. The healthy body weight for my height is 190-205.
-
Yup. I weigh 205 and I'm 6'. I'm allegedly overweight.
-
I'm 5'9ish, 175, and in the best shape of my life, but according to BMI I'm still just overweight. To be dead centre of "normal" weight for my height, I'd have to be 147 lbs, which is a little ridiculous. BMI's not a completely useless measurement, but unless you're a woman or a marathon runner, it's worth taking with a pinch of salt.
-
I'm 5'9ish as well and I'm back up to 168, I had dropped to a recent low of 154.
-
HO-LEE SHITBALLZ, BATMAN!
-
I liked being BMI wise underweight.
Now I'm just normal.
-
I need to go back to being the cut motherfucker I was before my accident ...

Check out these freaks.

Skinny guys are perfect for this because they can actually be sculpted to look more natural, I think fatter guys are at a disadvantage because you can't take that shit off.
I can see movie stars having this done for roles such as with Tom Cruise in the fairly recent "Knight and Day" (pretty darn good actually). It these cases only slight enhancement to provide definition would be required .
-
I can imagine them just editing the footage to make themselves look better.
When was your accident thrash? I'm sure you've spoken of it before, I just don't remember it.
-

That takes thousands of dollars in CGI to follow the motion so well. Easier to modify the actor.

A few years back (6 or 7, I'm thinking) ...
... I was stilling still in traffic and was hit from behind at 60MPH
... it almost separated my neck from my shoulders
... I'm just NOW able to lift weights again and it still causes me large amts of pain, like right now, in fact
... I lost my ripped body as a result, however, I shall slowly get it back
... and thanks for asking!
-
I was pretty cut back in the day. I bet a few weeks of situps would bring me back to awesomeness, but then again I might stroke out trying. At least I know I don't have hundreds of pounds to lose before trying. (no offense)
I went from a weakling at 150 to a powerhouse at 165 in only 8 weeks of basic training. I know that every ounce of that gain was pure muscle . I can't preclude myself from doing that again sometime because now I know anything is possible.
Seems pretty far fetched, though ya never know.
Eh fuck ya
Yeah I bought a couple forties eat me.
-
pure mussel.
Clam chowder anyone?
-
He's all cockels and mussels... alive, alive-o.
-
muscle then you neophytes.
Make me fuck with incidentals.

Ah man, thats rough. At least you survived, that is the important thing.
What happened to the driver?
My friend had a similar ish thing happen to him, just a lot less extreme. He was fine, just had to go to the hospital for a check up. I didn't know so I got mad at him for oversleeping (i assumed that was why he wasn't there).

I asked you once, right after your Xmas call, and you didn't answer and now I see why! I'm glad you are doing all right- I was just in a similar accident- although the other persons speed was 45mph.
My sister was driving us-we were stopped at a red light.
She is having all kinds of trouble with her spine.
The doc said that if I hadn't been working out regularly (or at all) that I might have actually had injuries.
I hope you continue to get stronger.
-
Thanks to you both ...
I'm working on it, and I am the same; the strength of my neck kept it from separating ...
... The driver was ok; his elderly mom had minor injuries; then again, they saw it coming, I did not
... Again, I'm slowly getting it back
... I see the doc tomorrow, then, more working out
-
Do you guys listen to a particular genre or band while working out?
I am so looking forward to to Oreos!!! It's leg day!!!! Which means not only extra cardio, but Hiking in the creepy-crawly, super damp, mossy WOODS!!!!!!!!!!!!!
And the leg stuff with the bowflex.
:)
-
I rarely listen to music when working out, other than whatever bullshit the gym is playing. I don't like having anything directly in my ears, and for cycling purposes it's more dangerous than it's worth to not be able to hear what's going on around me.
-
I have been working out a lot lately. I have been lifting weights and running 2.5 miles a day. It is working, I'm skinny as hell.
-
I'm going to buy a shake weight.
-
Sounds good. Here's some cabfare.
-
Damn, you beat me to it!
-
You need that one from South Park that gives you encouragement and rewards.
-
I cycled 15 miles this morning, then went to the gym. Feelin' good.
-
CET: The gym is bad for my bank balance : (
-
Cycled 10 miles today, gym and another 14 tomorrow.
How expensive is your gym?
-
You need that one from South Park that gives you encouragement and rewards.
I rode my bike downtown last Saturday, only to find out that branch was closed on Saturday. To late to go anywhere else.
So Monday morning I went straight to the main post office, but they were closed. No notice of why. So I rode all the way back across town to the office downtown, only to find that they too were closed up tight. Realizing it must be some fucked up holiday I arrived home and verified online that it was Columbus Day. A holiday that should not even exist. It is only given such deference due to the fact that Columbus was an agent of the Vatican. The only other thing that can be said of Columbus is that he was a slave trader and mass murderer for the cross.
-
-
I pay the equivalent of almost fifty quid a month for my gym, so don't feel too bad.
-
I'm just buying kettle bells and working out at home.
Fuckin' expensive for just a ball of metal, though. Still, I can buy a kettlebell every month or two for about the same price as a gym membership.
-
I like that idea, but realistically I've found that unless I actually get in my car and go to the gym, I just don't do anything. I mean, I'll do some pushups or stuff at home now and then, but there are just too many distractions for me to get a proper workout going.
-
I pay the equivalent of almost fifty quid a month for my gym, so don't feel too bad.
You have a job.
Also theres a gym in town which is like a tenner a month. You can pause the contract for the months you're not in the city. It's perfect and its aimed at students. If I didnt have to get the uni membership I would so be on that.
-
Nice. And yeah, I don't actually mind paying what I do for my gym, it's a really nice place.
-
I like that idea, but realistically I've found that unless I actually get in my car and go to the gym, I just don't do anything. I mean, I'll do some pushups or stuff at home now and then, but there are just too many distractions for me to get a proper workout going.
I'm the exact opposite - if I have to get in my car again after I get home from work, it's probably not happening. And I hate going to the gym when it's crowded, so the immediate before/after time frame is out for me.
-
That's one of the things I really like about my gym, it's almost never crowded. And especially not in the middle of the day, when I tend to go. I often have the place almost to myself.

Waiting for my gf to get her stuff for a sleepover last night, I was playing around with a tape measure on her patio table (this isn't going where you think it is, pervs), and it turns out that a day and a half removed from last working out, I have a 40cm neck and 38cm biceps. I have no idea what this means or what normal measurements are, but it surprised me that my neck is thicker than my arms.
Measurements, anyone else? Is this weird? Throw in calves, too, I'll measure those tonight.
-
43cm calves.
-
Hey, we don't take kindly to "cm" in these here parts!
-
My gf is German, and so is her tape measure. Germans don't acknowledge the existence of the inferior imperial system. Psssh.
But here, lmgtfy!
Neck 15.75"
Biceps 14.96"
Calves 16.93"

Hahaha ....

Legs/shoulders/back day today. Feelin' good and I'm fucking stahhhving.
-
I did 5-10 miles on my bike three times so far this month ...
-
Nice! I picked up my newly serviced bike today and rode it about 3 miles to my dad's house, then ran quite a bit in the process of taking my stepson to ride his new bicycle. Not bad for being really quite ill.
-
I gave my daughter my car and started bicycling to work and back about 3 months ago.
I'm still a fat bastard. But, it's cheaper.
-
More money for Twinkies ...
... wait!; "stepson"?
