So Nick, random Kanji question:
Why does Japanese writing have those tiny little hiragana characters above or next to kanji? Is this to help with pronunciation?
As an example of what I'm talking about, here's a random scan showing the tiny characters. If you zoom in you can see the words in the lower left all have tiny little hiraganas floating all over the place.

Kanji is hard to read, and you learn them gradually as you grow up here. There are phonetic characters as well (our A-B-C) which kids use early. In products aimed at young people they'll often put the phonetic characters in there with the kanji.

All of the above. Mostly knowing that I can do it after using this language for more than half my life. Secondly it goes on the resume as the hardest test for a foreigner learning Japanese. Pay is indirect, but I can use this to guarantee to my work and any future work that I'm the real deal, and when I start another company here it will go in the profile to put potential clients at ease.

Man, that's a lot at stake there, maybe I should have thought it through after the exam.
